Tutoring: Our main thrust into the community is our after school ESL (English as a Second Language) literacy program. Our core group of six teachers are assisted by energetic volunteer tutors. We serve about 80 children a day.

        Children learn English, get help with their homework and also have the opportunity to use one of the many computers available at the center. We have also found that improving the children’s literacy and speaking ability in Spanish makes it easier for them to learn English. Our bi-lingual Spelling Bees are tough and fun!

Parenting: The raising of children can be a difficult task. We educate new parents in the techniques for the successful rearing of their children.

Beginning to Learn: This is a program for pre-school aged children in a bilingual setting. They learn “Survival English” and the social skills necessary to be successful kindergarteners.

Cultural Arts: We recognize the rich cultural heritage of Hispanic Americans and support programs in both music and art.

English for Adults: This class teaches English as a Second Language (ESL). This evening program benefits working adults to help them understand

Public Information: The HLC is a relay point for information that concerns the Hispanic community. Our large facility has been used for meetings ranging from understanding motor vehicle laws and drunk driving, basic banking and insurance to emergency preparedness.

Community Outreach: We help to improve community awareness by partnering with local organizations such as Cabarrus County Schools, the City of Concord, Concord Police Department, Concord Fire Department, Cabarrus Health Alliance and others.

Housing: The HLC works in partnership with Habitat for Humanity to teach qualified people the necessary administrative skills to be successful homeowners.

HLC Teen’s Club: Not just a social club for teenagers but a way to improve responsibility levels and self-esteem through community service and fund raising for scholarships.
